Robert J. Cassens Memorial Music Scholarship
GPA 2.5 or better; a music student with an interest in Jazz.
This perpetual scholarship in memory and honor of Robert J. Cassens was established by his family and many friends. Bob was a devoted musician and bass player. His love for jazz, in particular big band jazz, led him to form the Orange County Rhythm Machine, a 16-piece jazz band in the late 1960s. The band played for many years in local clubs and restaurants in the Huntington Beach area, Disneyland, and for two Presidents. Over the years, members of the band featured young musicians who developed their musical skills and have become well-known figures in the music industry. One of those musicians was a GWC faculty member and close friend, Tom Kubis, who joined the band himself as a gifted saxophone player when he was 19 years old. This scholarship is awarded to a deserving music student who wishes to pursue a career in the music industry, whether it is playing an instrument, composing, arranging, or some other aspect in the field of music.
