Dr. Americo Lopez-Rodriguez Scholarship

Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA; Continuing student at GWC; Should be involved in a leadership role within a GWC club. Must be part of Raices, Mesa, and or Puente at GWC.

Dr. Americo Lopez-Rodriguez came to this country as an immigrant when he was 16 years old, not knowing a word of English, but like the immigrants before him, was willing to overcome this obstacle and many others. His mother always told him that nobody owed him anything and that if he wanted something he had to work for it. He has always lived by this philosophy. He attended community college while working full-time and then transferred to UCSB, earning a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. Dr. Lopez-Rodriguez retired in 2016 and is a part-time professor at Golden West College. This scholarship was established in support of improving the lives of underserved students through educational assistance, cultural awareness, and active involvement in the community.
